This study aimed to investigate reality, problems, and improvement strategy in counseling for
students with disabilities in inclusive settings of secondary schools. For the purpose, one hundred
and twenty-one counseling teachers/counselors from secondary schools in Gyeongsangnam-Do
participated in this study; a survey was used to collect data. The main results were as follows.
First, students provided with counseling services in the higher rate were those who have
intellectual disabilities, emotional and behavior disorders, and learning disabilities. The
counseling method used were various including psychological counseling, art therapy, behavior
therapy and play therapy. The counseling topics in the higher rate were improvement of social
skills, improvement of school adaptation ability, and behavior modification for problem
behaviors. Second, counseling for students with disabilities was little vitalized, and counseling
services for them were less provided than regular students. Third, main problems of counseling
for students with disabilities were the lack of communication or intelligence abilities of those
students, the lack of counselor’s understanding and knowledge for students with disabilities, the
lack of counseling time for the students due to counselor’s excessive work. Fourth, the
improvement strategies in counseling for students with disabilities suggested mainly were
strengthening of counselor’s counseling ability for students with disabilities, solution of
counselor’s excessive work, and increase of counselor’s understanding and knowledge for
students with disabilities. The results hopefully will be used as basic data to develop policies
to improve counseling services for students with disabilities in inclusive settings.
