본 연구 인구고령화와 더불어 증가하고 있는 치매노인의 주거시설에 대 한 주거환경에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대하여 파악하였으며, 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 치매노인 가족들은 치매증상과 환경 간에 중요한 관련성이 있다는 것을 경험하면서도 실제로 환경 개선의 필요성에 대해서는 적극적인 인식 을 지니고 있지 않았다. 둘째, 알츠하이머성 치매는 중등 증에서 환경개선 에 관한 사항이 특히 나타났고, 혈관성 치매는 중증의 경우 환경개선하려는 자신의 의지가 매우 큰 것으로 나타났다.셋째, 경증 단계의 치매증상에 대 처한 주거환경 개선 항목의 경우, 공통적인 사항은 화장실 외부에서 일어나 는 증상과 관련한 것과 정신적인 불안증상에 대처항목, 노인을 관찰할 수 있는 환경에 대한 요구사항이 적잖았다.넷째, 환경이 쾌적한 측면은 대부분 치매노인의 공간을 보다 좋은 위치에 놓아, 채광(採光), 전망(展望)의 정도 는 고려하였으나, 좀 더 나은 냄새 제거를 위한 물리적 환경의 조처는 매우 적은 것으로 나타났다.
