Despite the fact that the assistant system was introduced as one of work study programs initially, now most of assistant are not a student but one who do the job for living. As a result, the assistant system caused several problems like low income and improper benefits/supports for assistants. The purpose of this study is to explore the current status of the assistant system at national universities and find proper solutions. In-depth interviews with seven assistants at national universities were conducted. The results showed that non-student assistants at national universities make up 90% of the total number of assistants at national universities and assistants who have no affiliation with a department or a college were 20% of the total number of assistant at national universities. The interviewees complained about limit of contract renewal, wage cut caused by job title change, job responsibilities, relationship with other staffs, and exclusion of overtime pay. It was recommended that institutions classify types of assistants and job responsibilities, reassign assistants to a proper job, define the relationship with other staffs, and review benefits for assistants.
