This study researches the successful management cases of museum’s open storage
in order to meet the new paradigm of the 21st century museums for Korean National
Art Conservation Center which is opened in 2008. The open storage’s objective is to
share the humanistic value based on the concept of ‘the owner of the collection is all
of us.’ A new attempt of museums is to rediscover the reason and value of the museum
which is faced various challenges in 21st. century. Open storage of museums is
primarily aimed at the active learning of the visitors, and in order to do so, the
digitalization and integrated management system of the collection information is
provided as an essential condition. Kroean National Art Conservation Center is now
planning the two functions of ‘preservation and restoration of art works’ and ‘open
storage’, and this is very similar of current open storage cases of other developed
museums in overseas. This study analyzes the cases and features of successful museum
open storage and suggests appropriate suggestions and applications for Korean National
Art Conservation by looking at the operation plan of Korean National Art
Conservation.
