As the smartphone is becoming the most widely used mobile device, employing smartphones and their applications for English language teaching is increasingly being researched. Since incorporating smartphone applications into the language classroom is quite new and emerging phenomenon, research on the effectiveness of using smartphone applications in an educational setting is still scant. In this regard, this study attempted to provide college students with a mobile learning opportunity by using a smartphone application that would help improve their English presentation skills. The widely used mobile SNS application, Naver Band was incorporated into an English speaking class at a university in Korea. Student background questionnaires, end-of-semester questionnaires, and focus group interviews were employed for data collection. The research findings showed that the use of the Band in an English speaking class was effective in developing students’ English presentation skills. In addition, students had an overall positive attitude and perspective toward a mobile learning embedded in the Band. Band-based mobile learning extended collaborative learning opportunities in the classroom and increased students’ involvement in group discussions. Based on the research findings, pedagogical implications for mobile learning are discussed.
