The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of English education major university students
about English grammar and communicative English grammar teaching. For this, a survey was conducted
among freshmen, juniors and seniors of English Education Department at C University in Kangwon
Province to inquire their needs for English grammar, affective attitudes, meaning-centered instructional
methods and grammar learning. The results are as follows; junior and senior students more keenly feel the
need for English grammar in speaking and communication than freshmen. All the respondents share their
opinions concerning the following three points: (1) English grammar is most needed for students to improve
English reading and writing ability and to get good scores. (2) Communicative activities have to be done
to learn the skills to utilize the acquired grammatical rules. (3) It is better to learn some necessary
grammatical rules which are frequently employed for communication than to study all the rules. These
results suggest that the students deem it important to first learn some basic grammatical rules necessary for
communication and then to have the knowledge of communicative grammar for the application of those
rules.
