Recently, the demand of post-secondary education has been increased in the students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. However, there was not much discussion about the need of this higher education and how to operate it practically in Korean society. Firstly, this research is for defining their college education, the post-secondary education of the students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Following the outlook of what kind of post-secondary education is going on currently in Korea, confronting suggestions for improvements through considering problems of each kind of them.
The post-secondary education systems in Korea for the students with intellectual and developmental disabilities can be categorized in four: Unified department, Independent department, Independent college and Special course. “Unified department” is to allow the students with disabilities to study together with students with non-disabilities while making separate department is “Independent department”, and for the improvements of “Unified department”, the current ‘university entrance with a special case’ has to be reinforced and the teaching-learning supports need to be strengthened. And for developing “Independent department”, it needs to be collaborated between community-related organizations based on the specialties in advanced levels.
Separate college only for the persons with disabilities is “Independent college”, which is needed to build up Campus and supply teaching staffs for operating curriculum. Lastly, “Special course” is run by an auxiliary organization i.e. continuing education institutes, and for its developing, post-high courses set up in a special school has to be phased out gradually and transferred to lifelong education programs in a university. Each system needs to be examined about their limit exactly, to be diagnosed the cause of this and to search for developmental solutions in order to encourage the persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities to get more chances of the post-secondary education.
