The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of computer education of students and teachers at schools for the blind. The objectives of this study are as follows;
First, it was to analyze the environment for computer education at schools for the blind. Second, it was to analyze teaching tools in computer class at schools for the blind. The results were as follows;
First, it found that most of the schools had at least one computer classroom and it was opened for students all the time. However, the numbers of computers and softwares were not sufficient for good computer education at schools for the blind compared to regular schools. Students with low vision used computers at home more than students who were blind. High school students used computers on internet more than on games while middle school students used computers on games more than on internet. Second, students with visual impairments used Sense Readers as screen reader programs most often and they used LV as expanding screen programs most often. Most of teachers tried to focus on individual students but they had difficulties to teach students with multiple impairments. As for the textbooks for computer education, computer textbooks and reference books were usually used and internet and TV media were also used. To improve qualities of computer textbooks they should be revised and other educational programs, materials and softwares for students with visual impairments should be required.
