이 연구는 시각장애대학생의 도서관 이용과 요구 그리고 대학 도서관 사서의 시각장애대학생을 위한 서비스 제공 등을 알아보고자 수행했다. 연구자는 2005년 현재 특수교육대상자 특별전형을 실시하고 있는 대학교 9개교의 시각장애학생 9명과 해당대학교 도서관 사서 9명을 대상으로 반구조화 된 면접을 실시했다. 면접은 모두 녹음하여 전사한 후 질적 연구방법론에 따라 분석했다. 시각장애학생의 면접자료를 기초로 하여 물리적인 접근으로서의 도서관, 인터넷 환경에서의 도서관 이용, 인적 및 제도적 도서관 서비스 체계로 범주화 했다. 대학 도서관 사서의 면접자료를 기초로 하여 서비스인식에 미치는 사서의 내적 요인, 사서의 외적 요인, 실질적인 서비스제공 사례 등으로 범주화 했다.
The purpose of this study was to inquire into use of university libraries by students with visual impairments. Nine students with visual impairments and nine librarians participated in this study. Based on a 19-item questionnaire (for students with visual impairments) and one 5-item questionnaire (for librarians), the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews individually with each participant. All the interviews were recorded and transcribed by the researcher and two colleagues. Based on the students\' interviews, four themes were extracted, including access to physical facilities in the library, accessibility of internet-oriented library system, human resources in the library for supporting students with visual impairments, and policies for supporting such students and university libraries. Based on the librarians\' interviews, personal variables and environmental variables were identified to facilitate the use of university libraries by students with visual impairments.
