The purpose of this study is to investigate the self-esteem and pro-sociality of the maladjusted children
and this study is synthetic with using quantitative research.
This study is made to present the possibility of the play with sand box to be the basic material for
building children’s personality. For this purpose, the practical case has been analyzed to understand the
effect on children’s sociality and self-esteem, as well as the way of expression of themselves and the
opportunity of concentration on themselves.
The target of the researcher is the 5~6 year old children in N child-care center which is attached
to welfare facility in J area in Busan. The children are distracted, disturb others and have difficulty
of social management, revealing the problem with a external maladjustment and their low self-esteem.
Their home backgrounds are also normal except for one child whose parents are divorced. The research
has been made in a daily life without any variable factor. The period of this research is 25 weeks,
from August 16, 2006 to February 16, 2007 and pre examination, processing program, post examination
are operated in order.
As qualitative study, Young sook Kim’s modification on the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence
and Social Acceptance for Young Children by Harter and Pike were used. In addition, Won young Lee’s
revision and its questionnaire paper and assist material on the \"Skill Situation Measues\" by Mcginnis
and Goldstein were used as measuring tool of pro-sociable behavior. For qualitative analysis tools used
for this study are as follows.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, there was an improvement of self-esteem in cognitive ability of the children which is one of
the sub factors and difference in each children who played with sand box. Second, there was an
improvement of pro-sociality in sharing, help, and collaboration and it was shown in each children who
played with sand box. And there was a change in children\'s pro-Behavior.
