The major purpose of this research was to examine cirtically ‘independence’ of Korean youth from a family systems perspective. This purpose was based on the view that today many Korean youths have faced significant challenges in gaining adult status, and on a family systems perspective assuming that individual system is interconnected with family and culture system. Then, this study attempted to classify ‘independence’ of Korean youth with two axises including individual system level on one axis and family/culture system level on the other axis. For these purposes, the study first reviewed the changes of demographic characteristics related to the adulthood transition in Korea. Basically, critical literature review method was used for the research. It was expected that this study would provide an integrative and systemic framework to understand the transition to adulthood in this complicated Korean society, and contribute to provide useful guidelines for education and therapy with practitioners working with young adults and their families.
