This study analysed the effect of Alcoholics Anonymous participation on alcohol problem rehabilitation of problem drinkers in a community. The data collected from 171 problem drinkers in a community were examined for analyses. Logistic regression was used to estimate the effects of Alcoholics Anonymous attendance and involvement on abstinence at 6 months.
Results showed that more Alcoholics Anonymous involvement were statistically related abstinence at 6 months, but Alcoholics Anonymous attendance were not. Promoting Alcoholics Anonymous involvement appears to improve abstinence at 6 months. Actively promoting Alcoholics Anonymous involvement may therefore be a useful clinical practice for helping problem drinkers. According to the results, implications for social work research and practice were discussed.
