This paper examined critically the perspectives of Dewey and Oakeshott on the aim of education. Dewey denies imposed, general, and ultimate end and suggests that the aim of education is continued growth through the reorganization and reconstruction of experience. Dewey\'s perspective serves to explain the terminal goals of education founded upon the intrinsic educational activities, but neglects the normative goals of education as criteria that educational activities should satisfy. By contrast, Oakeshott\'s perspective not only serves to explain the terminal goals of education that are based on educational activities themselves, but also suggests the normative goals of education as criteria that educational activities should satisfy. Educators need to understand that when they engage in educational activities, they need to exert efforts not only on achieving the terminal or immanent goals of education, such as writing letters correctly, but also on realizing the normative or transcendent goals of education, such as realization of whole person.
