Since the proclamation of special law for promoting gifted and talented education in 2000, there were
a big step to establish the first high school for the gifted in science. On 2002, Ministry of Education
decided to transform the Busan Science High School as the first Gifted high school in Korea, named the
Korea Science Academy(KSA). It is recognized that openning a new type of school in Korea can be a
catalyst to stimulate schools moving toward creativity and student-centered education. In the past 10
years, KSA have made so many efforts to provide appropriate educational services coping with gifted
students’ dynamic learning challenges. As a result of successive trials to set up a futuristic gifted
education model, KSA has initiated many reformative programs for the gifted in science, for instance, a
customized mentoring program called Research & Education(R&E), introduction of project-based and
integrated subject, etal. This study tried to review the brief history of educational practices of gifted high
schools in Korea, including educational services and its social impacts during the last ten years. Based on
some implications through such reflections on gifted education for the science, this study suggested twelve
tasks which every gifted high school for the science in Korea should have attention and make efforts to
accomplish for the future.
