This article is based upon a survey conducted about Korean elementary and secondary
school teachers' demands for revising the current teacher training curriculum. The sample
was 1,800 in-service teachers, comprised of every five teachers from the total of 360 schools
randomly selected with consideration given to the levels of schools and the sizes of region.
1,424 survey questionnaires were returned from 1,800 distributed copies. The results
demonstrated their demands for expansion and reduction in the three main areas of the
Korean teacher education curriculum - subject-matter, teacher education and liberal arts
areas. There was a demand for increasing courses in the subject-matter area. In particular,
pedagogical courses dealing with instructional issues such as effective instructional strategies,
understanding learners, raising motivation levels, and reformulating curriculum are more
demanded than subject content courses. For the teacher education area of courses, practicum
is requested to be expanded with more curricular emphasis on understanding students in
guidance and counseling, development of professional qualities and effective management of
classrooms. Preference was given to keeping the status quo for the ratio of liberal arts
courses, of which content should be revised to have more emphasis on interpersonal and
communication skills, interdisciplinary studies and creativity.
