This study explores what is the essence of consulting and whether the consulting can be used in the school organization at the point of time when the concern about the consulting is increasing in the educational fields. School consulting is defined as the independent and advisory service that the experts on the education and the management in schools provide for schools or teachers according to their spontaneous request to solve their problems. In view of the characteristics of school organization, there are some limitations in introducing the consulting into the school society. But some other characteristics of the school organization show great potentialities that the limitations can be overcome. The characteristics of school organization that have negative effects on school consulting include the characteristic of the domesticated organization whose existence is guaranteed by the law, the characteristic of the service organization whose purpose is not to pursue the profit, and the individualism widespread in school society. Nevertheless, school consulting can be used in school society due to the following characteristics of school organization and the change of social environment around schools: teachers' enthusiasm for and commitment to education, the reinforcement of the autonomy and responsibility of schools and teachers, and the increasement of social demand and support to schools. In conclusion, school consulting can be used as a mechanism that helps develop the professional knowledge and skills of teachers and improve the quality of the educational output of schools.
