Teachers have a significant influence on gifted students and they are critical to the success of gifted programs. The purpose of this paper is to suggest effective teacher certification programs of gifted education in Korea by examining teacher certification programs of gifted education in America. In America, 33 states set regulations on teacher certification and endorsement in gifted education. For current teachers, certification/ endorsement in gifted education is given to the teachers who have completed the required in-service training or graduate courses of gifted education. In Korea, it is expected that more qualified and effective teachers for the gifted programs should be demanded, and in this respect we need to install teacher standards and teachers certification in the area of gifted education, in order to enhance teachers' competencies and to meet the needs of gifted and talented students. To train current teachers who want to teach gifted children, it is also strongly suggested that teacher training and certification programs should be installed through collaborative programs with graduate programs, as well as currently installed in-service professional development programs. In addition, considering that most gifted and talented elementary students spend most of their time in regular classrooms, we need to provide information and knowledge on the gifted education to every (pre)teachers in order to meet the educational/psychological needs of gifted and talented students.
