The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers‘ request intents and strategies and children’s responsive strategies. The subjects were twenty teachers and twenty 4- and 5-year-old children. All the interactions between the teachers and children during free play were observed and transcribed for the analysis. The results of this study are summarized as following: 1) The teachers requested in the order of behavioral intent, informational intent, and opinion intent. 2) The request strategies of teachers showed in the order of direct request, indirect request, and physical request. Furthermore the teachers' intents were related with their strategies. 3) Children's responsive strategies were mostly compliance or noncompliance regardless of the teachers' request strategies. The children were likely to comply especially when the teachers request directly.
