현대의 수많은 가치와 전통과 현대의 갈등 속에서 현대인들은 가치의 혼란을 경험하고 있다. 이러한 가치의 혼란을 넘어 개인과 사회의 정체 성과 가치 있는 삶의 방향을 제시하기 위해서는 그 지표가 되는 ‘이상적 인간상의 정립’이 필요하다. 이 글에서는 동양사상의 큰 주류인 유(儒)ㆍ 불(佛)ㆍ도(道)의 이상적 인간상을 간략하게 일별한 후, 주로 ‘선비’를 중심으로 한 이상적 인간상에 관해 살펴보았다. ‘선비’라는 이상적 인간상 은 출세간적(出世間的) 성격을 띤 불교나 도가의 이상적 인간상과는 달 리, 세간적(世間的)이고 현실참여적인 성격을 가지고 있다. 더구나 ‘선비’ 라는 인간상은 한국의 전통문화에서 현실적으로 오랫동안 유지되어 온 이상적 인간상인 까닭에 현실적인 적용의 가능성 또한 불교나 도가의 이 상적 인간상보다 더 크다고 할 수 있을 것이다. ‘선비’라는 이상적 인간상은 ‘어떻게 인간으로서 이상적인 삶을 살아갈 것인가?’에 대한 유교적인 해답이다. 선비란 요약하여 말하자면, 수기(修 己)를 통해 학문과 덕성을 닦고, 자신이 배운 도(道)를 치인(治人)을 통 해 사회에 구현하며, 항상 개인의 사욕보다는 공공의 정의[義]를 지향하 는 사람이 바로 ‘선비’이다. 한마디로 ‘선비’란 무엇인가 소유함으로 해서 행복해지고자 하는 소유지향적인 삶이 아닌, 좀 더 인간다워짐으로써 행 복해지는 존재지향적인 삶을 살았던 사람이다. 그리고 군자(君子), 진유 (眞儒), 대장부(大丈夫)와 같은 도덕적 인간상은 수기치인(修己治人)을 통 해 유교적 이념을 구현하는 선비라는 인간상의 다른 이름인 것이다. ‘선 비’는 분명 현대사회의 이상적 인간상은 아니다. 하지만 그것은 어쩌면 개인의 행복과 인간다움을 물질의 소유로 대체한 체, ‘인간다운 이상적 인 삶이란 무엇인가?’에 대해 별로 묻지 않는 현대의 소유지향적인 삶에 대해 그 부족한 부분을 일깨울 수 있는 가치지향적인 내용을 ‘선비’의 인간상은 포함하고 있는 것이다. 다만 과거의 이상적 인간상을 어떻게 현대와 조화되게 조율할 것인가는 우리가 고민해야 할 일이다.
Modern people are experiencing confusion from various values in modern world and from the conflicts between the tradition and the modern times. Beyond such confusion of values, required to present the individual and social identity and the direction of valuable life is "the establishment of ideal image of man." After giving a glance to the ideal image of man by Confucianismㆍ BuddhismㆍTaoism, the mainstream of Eastern thought, this research examined a 'Seonbi'-oriented ideal image of man. 'Seonbi', an ideal image of man, bears the nature of staying and participating in reality(世間的) different from the Buddhistic or Taoisitc ideal image of man with the nature of leaving home(出世間 的). Moreover, the human image of 'Seonbi' is an ideal one that has long been maintained in reality through traditional Korean culture. Therefore its applicability to reality is probably bigger than that of Buddhism or Taoism. 'Seonbi' as an ideal image of man is the confucian answer to the question, 'How to live an ideal life as a man?' In summary, 'Seonbi' is a man who cultivates knowledge and virtue through self-cultivation(修己), realizes the Tao(道) in society through governing people(治人) and aims always at the public justice rather than selfish desires. Who is 'Seonbi' in a word? It is he who lives not the possession oriented life trying to be happy by possessing something, but the being oriented life trying to be happy by becoming more humane. In addition, the moral image of man as a man of virtue(君子), real Confucian scholar(眞儒) and the supreme gentleman(大丈夫) is another name of Seonbi who realizes Confucian ideology through self-cultivation and governing people (修己治人). Seonbi is surely not an ideal image of man in modern society. However, to the modern possession oriented life that substitutes the possession of material for personal happiness and humaneness and rarely asks about 'what is humane, ideal life?', the 'Seonbi' image of man includes the value oriented content which is able to awaken what it lacks. We should only be concerned with how to tune the ideal image of man in the past to be harmonized with the modernity.
