‘선비’ 누구나 아는 듯한 말이지만 이 말의 정확한 의미가 무엇이며 어원(語源)이 무엇인지 확실한 답이 없다. 그런데 그러나 학계와 사회 일 각에서 이 말의 어원에 관한 ‘큰 목소리’가 존재하고 이에 동조하는 경 우가 적지 않음이 사실이다. 본고는 가능한 한 이를 소개하고 그 문제점 을 논평하기 위해 작성되었다. 그리고 오늘날 ‘선비’라는 용어가 담지(擔 持)하고 있는 뜻을 거듭 보충해왔다고 생각하는 ‘유(儒)’, ‘사(士)’, ‘군자 (君子)’가 유학(儒學) 경전(經典)에서 어떤 뜻과 연관되어 있는지를 새삼 일별하고 부연함을 목적으로 작성되었다. 결과 ‘큰 목소리’의 주장에는 납득할 근거가 전혀 제시되어 있지 않은 것임을 확인하게 되었다. 그리하여 적어도 지금까지는 중국 당(唐)나라 때 만들어진 것으로 보이는 ‘先 輩’라는 단어가 ‘선비’의 어원이 아닐 수 있다는 그 어떤 증거도 발견할 수 없음을 밝힌다. 더 이상 근거 없는 주장에 휘둘려선 안 될 것이다.
It seems that everyone knows the term ‘Seonbi(선비, scholars of Joseon)’. However there is no definite answer of its exact meaning and origin. Therefore, it is true that many people of our society are arguing with that. In this paper, I tried to introduce several kinds of opinions and commented on its problems. On the other hand, I tried to reveal the meaning of the term relating to the Confucius scriptures. In this point, I connected the concept to ‘Confucian scholar(儒)’, ‘scholar(士)’, and ‘nobleman(君 子)’ because these terms have complemented the meaning of Seonbi. As a result, most of contemporary opinions are lack of rational argumentation. And I discussed that there are no exact evidence of denying Seonbae is not the origin of the term Seonbi. We should not be dazzled by baseless opinions.
