This study was conducted to examine whether art therapy was effective in the reduction of guilt and the
promotion of self-forgiveness in a female university student with process trauma. The art therapy program
was conducted during the period from January 2012 to February 2013 and consisted of a total of 23
weekly, 60-minute sessions. The tools used for data analyses were: Trauma Check List, Trauma-Related
Guilt Inventory (TRGI), Korean-Version of State Self-Forgiveness Scale (SSFS-K), a tree-drawing test, and
interviews about artworks. The results of this study were as follows: First, art therapy was effective in
reducing guilt in the female university student with process trauma. Second, art therapy was effective in
the promotion of self-forgiveness in the female university student with process trauma. However, because
the subject of this study was also involved in religious activities during the period of art therapy, these
effects might not be solely attributed to the art therapy program. Nevertheless, self-review through images,
performed during the course of art therapy, is believed to have promoted a positive life change for the
student and, consequently, helped in the reduction of guilt and promotion of self-forgiveness Future
research needs to apply the same program to groups and individuals from various backgrounds and to
observe the results.
