This study used a concept-mapping approach to investigate experts’ perceptions of ‘good syllabi.’ Group
concept mapping is a mixed-methods approach that helps an expert group visually represent and organize
its ideas on a topic of interest. This method integrates qualitative group tasks of idea generation, sorting,
and rating with two quantitative analyses, multidimensional scaling, and cluster analysis. 15 participants
who have a doctoral degree on educational technology, developed a total of 164 idea statements related to
the concept of ‘good syllabus,’ which were ultimately combined and edited into 88 statements. Based on
the results of having the 15 experts classified the 88 statements, a concept map was formed, which was
made up of 2 dimensions and 5 clusters: teaching and learning goals, content by schedule, course
environment and management, learning tasks and performance, and learning evaluation. This study holds
significance in providing practical suggestions for developing good syllabi in order to improve teaching and
learning practice in higher education settings.
