본 연구는 대상관계이론의 관점에서 바느질을 활용한 미술의 치유성을 규명하고, 미술치료 매체로서 바느질의 가능성을 제안하는데 목적이 있다. 연구 대상은 페미니즘 작가 Louise Bourgeois, Faith Ringgold, Tracey Emin이며, 문헌을 중심으로 연구되어졌다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. Bourgeois의 바느질 작품을 ‘부분대상 part object’의 관점으로 볼 때, 어머니에 대한 연민의 감정과 아버지에 대한 분노를 ‘좋은 대상’과 ‘나쁜 대상’으로 전환시켜 치유해 나갔다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 Ringgold의 작품을 ‘내적대상 internal object’의 근거로 봤을 때, ‘충분히 좋은 어머니 good enough mother’라는 긍정적인 ‘투사적 동일시 projective identification’로 회복된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 Emin의 작품은 ‘중간대상 transitional object’의 관점에서 어머니의 부재를 ‘안아주는 환경 the holding environment’으로 대체하여 승화시켜나갔음을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 이들의 바느질 작업은 대상관계이론의 관점에서 볼 때 어머니를 떠올리게 하는 매개체로, 자신의 정신적 외상과 결부되어진 어머니와의 관계에서 그 치유적인 요인을 찾을 수 있었다. 또한 바느질 특성인 반복, 해체와 결합, 섬유의 부드러움이 치유적인 요인으로 작용한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 향후 바느질을 활용한 체계적인 미술치료 연구의 필요성을 제시하고, 바느질의 치유성을 확장시켜 나가야함을 알리는데 있다.
This research aimed to define healing properties of the art, from the perspective of object relations theory, suggesting possibility of needlework as a healing tool. My research focused on the literatures of 3 feminist artists: Louise Bourgeois, Faith Ringgold, and Tracy Emin. The findings of the research are as follows: Bourgeois viewed ‘part object’ in her needlework and attempted to heal by transforming her feelings of pity towards her mother and feelings of hatred towards her father using ‘good object’ and ‘bad object’ in her art works. Also, noticing Ringgold’s needlework using ‘internal object’, she went through healing process by experiencing positive ‘projective identification’ as in ‘good enough mother’. Lastly, Emin’s needlework expressed the absence of mother as in ‘the holding environment’ from the perspective of ‘transitional object’. As mentioned several times, needleworks, viewed as in object relations theory, allowed them to envision mother as a medium, acknowledging their psychological trauma in their relationship with mother were being restored as a healing tool Furthermore, needlework applied its intention of repetition, decomposition, composition, and texture of soft fabrics implying healing properties. Thus, the purpose of this research is to highlight the needs of future follow-up studies in art therapy using needlework systemically, and to possibly expand its healing properties as well.
