Illuminating T'oegye’s philosophy through the concept of Li(理) interpreted as
Heavenly Mandate, one can understand that T'oegye’s philosophy of Li is
purported to establish the basis for moral man who practices the highest good
in real life. Li of Heavenly Mandate commanding the practice of moral value
is a basis of integrated understanding T'oegye’s conception, issuance of Li and
Li emerging by itself. The assertion that Four Sprouts are the issuance of Li
means Li, which pursues the highest good, is appeared through the feeling of
human being. By T'oegye’s view on Heavenly Mandate, Four Sprouts are the
actualization of human’s emotional responses which is commanded by Li to
lead a person to pursue a practice of the highest good. Li emerging by itself,
the thought that the limit of things’ Li will reach according to the investigation
of things, means that Li is known as ethical direction of the highest good to a
person who pursues the practice of morality. From the understanding of
T'oegye’s Heavenly Mandate, Li as the highest good serves as a specific
command of moral practices to human beings. When a person knows and
practices the highest good with the sense of duty, moral values are finally
completed.
