오늘날 한국사회는 첨예한 복지논쟁에 접어들었다. 빈곤은 오늘날 복지제도 속에서 사회 적 연대의 문제로 인식되고 있다. 이러한 점을 염두에 두고, 이 연구는 예비 시민이라 볼 수 있는 고등학생들이 빈곤의 책임에 대해 어떤 식으로 윤리적 추론에 임하는 지 알아보았다. 이를 위해 다음과 같은 연구문제를 설정하였다. 첫째, 가난의 책임에 대한 고등학생들의 윤 리적 추론 방식과 그 양태는 어떠한가? 둘째, 빈곤극복에 대한 고등학생들의 인식, 학습경험 및 실천의지는 어떠한가이다. 이를 밝히기 위해 연구자들은 서울시에 소재한 한 일반고에 재학 중인 2학년 학생 12명을 면담하고, 이를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 학생들은 자신과의 관 계 속에서만 문제를 대하는 낮은 추론 단계에서부터 사회계약과 사회권 관점에서 응답하는 높은 추론 단계까지 다양한 양태를 보여주었다. 또 빈곤문제에 있어 학생들의 사회에 대한 불신이 높았다. 그럼에도 대체적으로 학생들의 문제해결 참여의지는 높다고 보기 어려웠고, 빈곤의 원인과 해결에 대한 학습경험도 충분히 주어지지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 분석결과를 토대로, 연구자들은 빈곤문제의 해결과 인간의 존엄성 옹호를 위한 높은 수준의 윤리적 사고 능력과 사회문제 해결을 위한 관여적 태도를 기르기 위해 어떤 교육적 노력이 필요한가에 대해 논의해보았다.
Discourses on welfare policies have become more controversial in South Korea. Among those is poverty that has historically perceived as a major theme of social solidarity within a broader scheme of social welfare. Based on this perspective, authors explored the ways in which high school students as future citizens perform ethical reasoning in a context of in-depth interview on issues of who’s responsible for poverty. The purpose of this study was twofold: to investigate the ways of high school students’ ethical reasoning, given the dilemma of individual responsibility vs. structural one as a primary cause for poverty and to examine their perceptions of poverty, learning experiences, and action engagement. For the analysis, interview with twelve students was conducted at a high schools in Seoul. Data from interviews suggest that students showed various ways of reasoning from egocentric thinking at a lower level to skilled ethical reasoning associated with perspectives of social contract and social rights. Students tend to discredit Korean society’s will to solve the poverty. But students turn out to be not active in their engagement in solving social problems, not to mention lack of learning experiences. Grounded on the result of this study, authors argue that educational efforts should be made to foster higher-oder thinking and participatory attitudes on social problems to overcome the predicaments of poverty and to enhance human dignity.
