음악적 성장을 위한 음악교육에 있어 음악적 사고에 대한 이해는 중요하다. 예술적인 특성이 중요시되어야 한다는 일치된 견해 속에서도, 음악적 사고는 여전히 음악의 지적 능력이나 인지 능력을 의미하며 언어적·논리적 사고의 측면이 보다 강조되는 경향이 있다. 본 연구는 그동안 인지 단계에서만 논의되던 음악적 사고의 문제를 지각과 인지를 연계하여 보다 넓은 차원에서 재조명하고자 하는 데에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 인지의 상향처리(bottom-up processing)와 하향처리(top-down processing) 이해를 통해 음악의 지각과 음악적 사고의 문제를 연계하여 음악적 사고의 개념과 범위를 넓히고자 하였으며, 사고과정에 영향을 주는 사고양식(thinking styles)을 살핌으로써 음악 교수·학습 방법 연구에 시사점을 제공하였다.
An understanding of musical thinking is important in music education to achieve musical growth. Even with an agreement that artistic features are significant, musical thinking still means intellectual ability or cognitive ability, and the aspect of linguistic, logical thinking is more emphasized. The purpose of this study is to connect perception and recognition to the problem of musical thinking that has only been discussed in stage of cognition, in order to shed new light on the concept and range of musical thinking in a broader level. An effort has been made to tie musical perception with musical thinking via comprehension of the concepts of bottom-up and the top-down processing. A theoretical basis is also established for music teaching/learning based on a consideration of the thinking styles that influence the process of musical thinking.
