The present study is a descriptive qualitative study which analyzed cancer counselling records recorded by nurse counsellors of cancer. Counselling on cancer with nurse counsellors was provided to older female patients with liver cancer at a cancer center of a university hospital from January 1 to December 31, 2016. Ninety-five patients were counselled in total, and a total of 543 counselling sessions conducted during this period was analyzed. In the analysis, the nursing needs of older female patients with liver cancer were divided into 3 categories including needs for information, needs for symptom management, and needs for economic support. The first category of needs for information included 6 subcategories of making appointments for examination and treatment, explanation on surgery, transplantation, and surgical treatment, counseling on drug administration, counseling on hospital administration, diet education, and other education; the second category needs for symptom management comprised 3 subcategories of physical symptom management, emotional symptom management, and leading daily life after discharge; and the last category of needs for economic support included 3 subcategories of in-hospital support, external support, and other kinds of support. The findings of this study help identify nursing needs of older female patients with liver cancer, and establish patient-centered nursing service strategies. Finally, it is expected that the study results will serve as basic data for developing practical and effective counselling protocols applicable to clinical practice.
