The present study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-aging activities of Agrimonia pilosa-Ledeb (APL) extract to determine the suitability of this plant as an ingredient for skin care products. First, APL was extracted with water and ethanol solution and ethanol extract was combined with Portulaca oleracea (PO) extract at four different concentrations due to its better performance. In comparison with the antioxidant activities of APL extract, PO extract and the mixture of APL and POE extracts, the APL extract exhibited superior DPPH radical scavenging activity. The APL and PO extracts exerted superior ABTS radical scavenging activity when applied alone rather than in mixture, and the scavenging activity levels between the APL and PO extracts were similar. The evaluation of anti-aging activities of the three kinds of extracts, the APL extract, applied alone and in combination with PO extract, showed similar inhibitory effects on elastase and collagenase activity. As a result, the APL extract proved to have antioxidant and anti-aging activities, making it suitable as an ingredient for skin care products. Future studies are necessary to identify the anti-inflammatory activity of PO extract and to provide evidence on the potential value of the mixture of APL and PO extracts as an ingredient for herbal beauty products.
