산업화에 따른 환경파괴와 의도적인 밀렵으로 전 세계 야생동물의 개체 수는 점점 줄어들고 있으며 일부 야생동물은 멸종의 위기에 직면해 있다. 중국의 대표적인 생태문학 작가 쉬깡은『정원 지키기』에서 여러 심각한 생태 파괴 현상에 대하여 다루었는데, 그 가운데「신성한 야생 종」은 코뿔소, 늑대, 코끼리, 천산갑, 세이커 등 다양한 야생동물들이 돈에 눈이 어두운 밀렵꾼들의 탐욕에 희생되고 있음을 고발하였다. 쉬깡은 작품 속에서 밀렵으로 인해 희생되는 야생동물들의 종류 및 개체 수, 암시장에서의 거래가격 등의 자료를 면밀하게 제시하였다. 또 한편으로는 야생동물의 멸종은 국가 간 빈부격차의 심화 속에 빈곤을 벗어나기 어려운 지역의 사람들이 생존의 방법으로 밀렵을 선택하는데 그 근본적인 원인이 있음을 분석하였다. 쉬깡은「신성한 야생 종」에서 천시우리앤 노인이 탐욕스런 밀렵꾼들과는 달리, 자신의 생계조차 돌보지 않고 왜가리의 생존과 서식지를 보호하기 위해 평생 노력하였음을 묘사하였는데, 쉬깡은 천시우리앤의 형상을 통하여 자연만물에 대한 생명존중 의식을 독자에게 전달하고자 한 것이다.
According to the environmental destructions and the premeditated poaching, the number of world s wild animals are decreasing very rapidly, some of them are faced with the crisis of extinction. Xu-Gang, one of the representative writers of Chinese Ecological Literary, exposed that a lot of wild animals such as rhinoceroses, wolves, elephants, pangolins, and sakers being sacrificed by the greedy poachers in his Sacred wild species of Defend Garden which involves the phenomena of various ecological destructions. Xu-Gang presented various data relating to poaching, such as species and population of wild animals which killed by poachers, and the trading prices of them in the black markets. Besides, he analyzed that the fundamental cause of poaching is the gap between rich and poor countries. Xu-Gang described that Chen-Xiu lian tired to protect the egrets and their habitats all her life, ignoring her own interests. We can find out that Chen-Xiu lian s moral quality is complete opposite of the poachers in Xu Gang s work. and Xu-Gang sent his thoughts of respect for life to readers through her image of peace.
