서애 류성룡은 관직이 영의정에 이르렀고 임진왜란 때 도체찰사(都體察使)로 활약하여 그 공적이 높이 평가되고 있으며, 하회마을의 유명세와 궤를 같이 하면서 안동지역 인물전설의 중심에 자리 잡고 있다. 그런데 각 마을의 역사적 입장과 상황에 따라서 전혀 다른 성격의 인물전설이 전승되고 있음이 주목된다. 이 글에서는 한 인물과 관련한 인물전설을 해당 인물의 일생과 관련한 여러 마을을 통해 살펴봄으로써 마을설화의 특성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 기존의 연구가 ‘전설을 통한 인물의 이해’, 혹은 ‘설화를 통한 마을의 이해나 비교’를 표방했다면, 이 연구는 ‘인물전설을 통한 마을마다의 인식 차이 비교’를 목표로 하고 있다. 또한 역으로 해당인물과 관련한 마을의 특성을 통해 인물과 마을공동체를 재인식하는 계기로 삼고자 하였다. 서애 류성룡의 위업이 새로이 조망 받는 현재 시점에서 서애를 둘러싼 그림자를 추적하는 작업은 서애에 대한 부정적 인식을 부각시키고자 하는 의도가 아니며, 그의 삶과 지역사회적 의미를 더욱 완결하는 의의가 있다고 생각한다. 『징비록』 등을 읽어본 이들은 모두 느끼겠지만 서애의 인물됨과 뛰어난 판단력은 저절로 존경과 연모의 마음을 일깨우고 있어 제대로 된 평가를 받지 못하는 서애가 안타까울 따름이다. 하지만 공동체의 공동작으로서 인물전설은 개인의 지식이나 정보에 기반한 감성을 따르기보다 공동체, 특히 마을의 역사적 경험을 바탕으로 한 공동체의 입장을 따르고 있음에 주목해야 할 것이다. 서애 설화에 대한 분석을 통해 얻을 수 있었던 성과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 마을문화로서 인물전설은 철저히 역사적 경험을 기반으로 한 마을구성원들의 입장을 형상화한다는 점이다. 둘째, 마을문화로서 인물전설은 개인의 입장을 넘어서 있으며 설사 자신이 반대의 입장에서 있어도 마을 전체의 입장을 따르게 됨을 확인할 수 있다는 것이다. 즉 인물전설에 있어서는 개인보다 마을이라는 공동체가 우선적으로 고려되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 서애 류성룡에 대한 인물전설은 역사적인 세부사실과 상관을 이루면서 민중의 입장과 의견을 역동적으로 반영하고 있다는 점이다. 민중은 서애를 통해 임진왜란의 발발과 극복과정에 대한 자신들의 의견을 적극 피력했던 것이다. 이는 문헌설화와의 유사성을 통해서도 확인된다.
Seoae(西厓) Ryu Sung‐Ryong(柳成龍) was a prime minister of the Joseon Dynasty and are highly appreciated in his achievements by displaying his activities as Dochechalsa(都體察使) in Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. He is securing his position in the center of character legend in Andong by being connected with fame of Hahoe village. By the way, it is noted that character legend with other features is being handed down according to historical position of each village. The purpose of the study was to examine features of village story by examining character legend related to one character through diverse villages related to the pertinent character’s life. If the existing researches expressed ‘Character’s understanding through legend’ or ‘Understanding or comparison of village through story’, the study has ‘Comparison of cognitive difference every village through character legend’ as its goal. The study made a foundation to re‐recognize character and village community through features of village related to the pertinent character in reverse. In the present point of time that Seoae Ryu Sung‐Ryong’s achievements take a new view, a work tracking traces around him has meaning to conclude his life and regional & social meaning more completely, not an intention to make negative recognition about him distinguished. As all people reading Jingbirok feel, it makes our heart hurt to be not evaluated in a proper way since his personality and good judgment make us aware of respect and attachment. However, we shall note that character legend as a joint work of community is following position of community on the basis of historical experience of community‐especially village‐ than following emotion based on each individual’s knowledge or information. Performances gotten by analysis on his stories are as follows. First, stories as village culture form position of village members based on historical experience thoroughly. Second, stories as village culture are beyond each individual’s position and follow the total position of village even if each individual is in position opposed to them. Namely, we can see that village community than each individual is considered preferentially in stories. Third, character legend of Seoae Ryu Sung‐Ryong is reflecting position and opinions of the people dynamically, having correlations with historical detailed facts. The people expressed their opinions positively in the process of overcoming Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 through Seoae Ryu Sung‐Ryong. It is checked through similarity with literary story.
