Military and military family are one community. The family also serves. They, as a military partner, help soldiers keep their duty and accomplish the original mission. However, in our society, military policy makers have not certainly recognized that the family needs support and advocacy. Military serviceman and their family members experience not only normal life stress, but also specific job-related stress. Support and social service for military family is a necessary work, not an option.
In this context, this study examined the utilization of social welfare system for military family support policy in our country, based on literature and information review regarding US Army family policy. In the military of United States, Various family support policies and practical services have been developed since World War Ⅱ. Military and civilian social workers have been playing a significant role for implementation of the policy and services.
For the change of military family support policy of Korea, this study recommends utilization of the healthy family support center and the community welfare center. First of all, military policy makers need to develop family support policy, and duty commanders need to change their recognition and attitude in the direction of military family-sensitive. The Korean academy of military social welfare also has to effort to find new program and services for military family support, and to practice the work. Future tasks for military family support are also addressed.
