This ethnography explored interactions between deaf people and their families, in part with the intent to identify factors promoting functional relationships. Purposeful sampling was employed to identify people with hearing impairments, who were then closely surveyed with participant observation and in-depth interviews. Field notes of insiders’ perspectives were kept and outsiders’ views of the culture of the deaf were also noted and interpreted. The researchers found that families did not have as much of a relationship with their hearing impaired family member as they desired. Nevertheless, families with a deaf member delight in one another and know the blessing of family that comes through understanding and acceptance. Based upon these results, the authors put forth suggestions for how to grow healthy communication and relationships among the members of families of the deaf.
