본 연구에서는 시공간적인 기억과 청각적인 기억을 중심으로 연령과 성별에 따라 아동기의 기억발달에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 시각 단기기억 및 작업기억, 그리고 청각 작업기억 과제를 컴퓨터로 실시할 수 있도록 개발하였는데 4세부터 5세는 유아용, 6세부터 9세는 초등학교 저학년용, 10세부터 12세는 고학년용으로 각각 다르게 구성하였다. 이 과제를 4세부터 12세까지 총 1109명 아동에게 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 연령에 따라 시각 단기기억, 시각 작업기억과 청각 작업기억이 유의미하게 증가하였다. 시각 단기기억과 작업기억은 11세까지 가파르게 증가하였으나, 11세와 12세에서는 유의미한 차이가 나지 않았다. 청각 작업기억의 경우에는 9세까지 연령별로 증가하였으나, 10세 이후에는 유의미하게 증가하지는 않았다. 성별의 경우에는 6세부터 9세 여자 아동은 시각 단기기억력에서 남자아동에 비해 우수하였고 청각 작업기억에서는 10세에서 12세 여자아동이 남자아동에 비해 우수하였다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 제한점과 의의, 그리고 앞으로의 연구 방향을 논의하였다.
The aim of this study is to identify the development of visual short-term memory, visual working memory and auditory working memory depending on ages and sex. We developed the computerized memory test which consists of a preschool version for 4 to 5 years old children, one for 6 to 9 years old children, and another for 10 to 12 years old children. 1,109 healthy Korean children, about 100 for each age group, participated in this study. The results suggest that memory develop along ages. Visual short-term memory and working memory increases steeply up to eleven years of age. Auditory working memory shows steep developmental slop till 10 years. Girls from 6 to 9 years perform better in visual short-term memory than boys of same ages. And girls above 10 years old also have better auditory working memory than boys of the same age. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed with suggestions for further study. Keywords：short-term memory, working memory, sex difference, children's development
