본 연구의 목적은 정서지능이 영재들의 정신건강에 미치는 영향에 관해 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 전기 자료에 대한 심리학적인 분석 방법을 활용하여 로버트 오펜하이머와 닐스 보어의 정서지능, 방어기제, 그리고 적응적 행동지표를 조사하였다. 정서지능에 대한 평가는 Salovey, Mayer, 및 Caruso(2002)가 제시한 이론적 모델에 기초하여 정서지능의 네 가지 구성요소 별로 진행되었다. 방어 기제는 DSM-IV의 방어 기능 척도를 사용하여 분석되었으며 적응적 행동지표에 대한 분석에서는 Vaillant(1997)의 모델을 활용하였다. 본 연구 결과 영재들의 정서지능 수준은 그들의 정신건강에 의미 있는 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 영재교육에서 정서지능을 향상시키는 프로그램을 도입하는 것이 중요하다는 점이 논의되었다.
The purpose of this study is to identify the influences of emotional intelligence on mental health of the gifted. The emotional intelligence, defense mechanisms and adjustment behavior index of Robert Oppenheimer and Niels Bohr were examined by the psycho-biographical analysis of their biographical data. The evaluation of emotional intelligence was conducted according to the four components of emotional intelligence in the theoretical model proposed by Salovey, Mayer and Caruso (2002). The defense mechanisms were analyzed according to the criteria of DSM-IV. The model of Vaillant (1997) was used to analyze the adjustment behavior index. The results showed that emotional intelligence played a role of a moderator variable for the relationship between giftedness and mental health. In conclusion, the importance of emotional intelligence enrichment programs in education for the gifted was discussed.
