This study is the psychoanalytical observation of traumatic image expressed in the works ofRené Magritte. Magritte, who had pursued surrealistic painting in the background of psychoanalysis, represented unconscious state by using the methods of irregularity of space, binding of heterogeneous matters, and modification and transformation of materials through objects.
Originated from the mother who took her own life by drowning in his childhood, his psychological trauma was analyzed on each the matic development of how some kinds of symbolic image were shown through his works. Magritte had figured his own scar repeatedly."No face", the primary feature in his drawing, has its origin from trauma caused by the very suicide ofhis mother. Besides, there are a disjointed body of woman,and a figure painting of a family showing a shape of coffin like a mystery story.
Magritte had diversely expressed his own trauma as his artistic works through its reconstruction and reorganization, resulting that his trauma could be sublimed in to his artistic representation. It means to say it could be understood as art for healing to pursuein art therapy.Therefore,this study was able to re-examine Magritte's artistic works on spontaneousness, symbolization, being conscious from unconsciousness, feeling expression and discernment, creativeness and sublimation that should belong to primary healing factors in art therapy.
