Objectives: This study identified characteristics of spousal conflict, effective family therapy interventions, and the process of change in marital therapy. Methods: To identify the characteristics of spousal conflict and the effects of family therapy interventions on couples’ processes of change, the researchers used constant comparative analysis with open coding, organizing the analysis with Miles and Huberman’s matrix and network display. Results: The results revealed varied causes of conflict when a couple contemplates divorce; however, family of origin issues were noteworthy. The therapeutic interventions, which proved effective, included facilitation of communication between husband and wife, the husband’s differentiation from his family of origin, and greater spousal recognition. Conclusions: If a couple’s marriage can be saved when they are on the brink of divorce, it makes sense for them to pursue therapy during the month they must wait, by law, to finalize their divorce.
