Personality theorists and professionals in the field of marriage counseling agreed that self-esteem has generally been considered to be a significant contributor to the success of a marital system. When practitioners of marriage counseling conduct marital enrichment programs, their purpose would be best achieved by focusing on both the communication factor and the self-esteem factor without the exclusion of either.
In this study, the marital group counseling program including therapeutic factors of Satir\'s growth model and McHolland\'s self-affirmation for improving self-esteem and communication was designed. Participants were 9 married couples recruited through the newspaper and internet advertisement, and they attended 8 sessions of total 16 hours. Non-participant group consisted of 9 couples whose demographic characteristics were very similar to participant group. Both group were assessed the level of self-esteem, couple communication and marital adjustment before and after program, and follow-up assessment was performed 2 months after the program was completed.
Results indicated that marital group counseling program designed in this study were significantly enhancing couples\' self-esteem, couple communication and marital adjustment, and the effects of this program were maintained 2 months after completion of program. In addition, this study shows that self-esteem is the core content of marital group counseling program as well as couple communication to enhance marital adjustment.
