In this study, we designed a special education assistive technology system consisting of
Haptic-display providing visual information converted to tactile information and educational
contents. To design a special education assistive technology system appropriate for special
education environment, we derived system requirements by surveying teachers and visually
impaired students, and we also analyzed tactile information perception characteristics of visually impaired students based on in-depth interviewing. In addition, we analyzed current
special education resources and special education technology devices, and we designed a
new special education technology system appropriate for visually impaired special education
environment based on the analysis results. We designed the Haptic-display device and its
user interface considering of tactile information perception characteristics of visually impaired students and their requirements, and also designed educational contents producing program that can automatically translate text, equation and visual information to tactile information. We expect that the proposed system can maximize learning efficiency of visually impaired students.
