The purpose of this research is to understand the features of PPAT reaction of elementary school
students in depression and see if PPAT can be used as a tool to discriminate depression from normal state.
The objects was 735 students who were in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th grade. The depressed group and undepressed
group were separated by depression score which the standard was 21. Child depression inventory and
PPAT were used as research tools. PPAT was analyzed by FEATS which is formal elements scale and also
by content scale. As a result, out of 14 the formal elements scale, two groups have shown significant
difference in 9 scales which are prominence of color, implied energy, space, integration, logic, realism,
development level, details of object & environment, person. In the content scale, there was great difference
in colors used in the whole picture, approximate age of person), actual energy of person), total number of
apples), environmental details. As we can see through the result above, there is significant difference in a
few parts about PPAT diagnosing the depression of elementary school students. This result corresponds
with previous studies about the features of pictures painted by the depressed people and this implies that
this can be used as a tool to discriminate the depression of children.
