가나안농군학교의 창립자로 한국의 대표적인 성인교육자인 일가(一家) 김용기는 생명존중사상에 충직했던 생태친화적인 자연인(自然人)이었다. 처음부터 김용기는 자연적 삶에 거슬리는 일에는 반드시 저항했으며 자연에 어울리는 일 이를테면 흙을 사랑하는 농사꾼의 일에는 충실했다. 따라서 김용기의 항일투쟁도 극히 자연스럽게 시작된 일상의 일이었다. 한편, 항상 꿈을 꾸는 몽상가(夢想家)로서 이상촌 운동을 완수해 낸 김용기의 좌우명이 되어 버린 “일하기 싫으면 먹지도 말라”는 성경의 말씀은 평생 동안 그가 실천했던 과제였다. 그에게는 ‘일을 하라는 하나님의 말씀’이 삶의 에너지였으며, 이는 ‘소멸하려는 경향’ 즉 엔트로피를 막아주는 태양 에너지와 같았다. 특히 김용기에게 기독교 하나님과의 관계형성은 사람과 사람 그리고 세계 만물들과의 공존, 공생, 공진화가 지극히 당연한 삶의 이치라는 사실을 각인시켜 줄 수 있는 원동력이었다. 이렇게 해서 태어난 철학이 바로 그의 복민사상(福民思想)인데, 이것이 그에게 성인교육실천의 토대가 되었다. 그런데 그가 추구한 ‘이상촌건설’이라는 ‘마을사상’과 비형식적, 무형식적, 준형식적 성인교육활동은 늘 동반자였다는 사실이다. 이는 오늘날 성인교육실천의 새로운 장이 되고 있는 ‘(평생)학습마을(도시)사업’에 중요한 시사점을 준다.
Kim Yong-Ki was a natural man who was very eco-friendly with the thought of regard to life. He always resisted against the anti-natural life by born and played a roll only as a genuine farmer in loving the soil. Accordingly, he could begin an anti-Japanese struggle very easily and naturally. For him it was the life of slave to live under the Japanese rule and not the life in front of God's wisdom. Meanwhile, the daily life was that of a prayer who looked for the wisdom of life as an answer of God. In addition, he was a dreamer who imagined the construction of ideal villages. In these villages he realized his maxim "do not eat, if you will work" that the bible teaches. To him the 'work' in God's words was the energy of life that could be ecologically understood as the 'negative-entropy', which is able to protect life from the entropy that means the perishing trend of life. Especially, the relation between Christian God and human beings and between man and men and the co-existence and co-evolution of living beings in this earth were awakened for him as the natural principle of life. In his thinking process appeared the thought of the blessed people of a presbyter Yong-Ki Kim.
