This study investigates the motivating and demotivating factors that affect the English-learning motivation of Korean middle-school students learning English using musicals. Six third-year middle-school students in an alternative school participated in this study. Participants took English classes 15 times a month which use musical movies as learning materials. They were asked to answer semi-structured interview questions about their motivational changes in English learning and their thoughts on English class. The data was analyzed using content analyses. The results identified five motivating factors and two demotivating factors that have an impact on students’ English learning. The motivating factors included 1) musical elements of musicals, 2) class content and lessons, 3) teaching method, 4) peer effect, and 5) improvement in English skills. On the other hand, demotivating factors included 1) excessive study load and 2) overly high expectations of teachers. Pedagogical implications are provided based on these findings.
본 연구는 뮤지컬을 활용한 영어학습이 한국 중학생들의 영어 학습 동기에 미치는 영향을 살펴봄으로써 학생들의 영어 학습 동기에 작용되는 영어 뮤지컬의 동기 요인과 탈동기 요인을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 여섯 명의 대안학교 중학교 삼학년 학생들이 본 연구에 참여하였다. 참가자들은 한 달 동안 뮤지컬을 활용한 15차시의 영어 수업을 들었다. 참가자들의 영어 학습에서의 동기 변화와 영어 수업에 대한 그들의 생각은 반구조화 면담법으로 조사되었다. 연구 결과는 내용 분석법에 의해 분석되었다. 그 결과 다섯 가지의 동기 요인과 두 가지의 탈동기 요인이 발견되었다. 동기 요인으로는 음악적 요인, 수업 내용, 교사의 수업방식, 동료 효과, 영어 실력 향상이 동기화 요인으로 발견되었다. 탈동기 요인으로는 과도한 학습량과 교사의 과도한 기대가 추출되었다. 이를 바탕으로 본 논문은 교육적 시사점을 제시하고 있다.
