최근 우리 사회에서는 극심한 양극화 현상이 사회문제로 대두되고 있다. 이는 양극화 현상의문제가 단지 경제적 불균형에 국한된 것이 아니라 삶의 전 영역에까지 확산되고 있기 때문이다. 요컨대 빈부의 양극화가 기회의 불평등으로 이어지고 다시 사회의 고정된 계급을 양산하여 분리된 계급간의 갈등이 고조되는 것이다. 이는 마치 전 근대사회로의 퇴행을 연상케 한다. 이와 관련해 본 논문에서는 증산의 상생이념과 대순진리회의 종교교육에 주목하여 양극화 현상 해소를 위한 이념적 모색을 시도하고자 한다. 증산의 종교 활동기였던 조선 후기 사회는 철저한 신분제가 근간을 이루는 불평등의 사회였다. 이는 오늘날 한국 사회가 겪고 있는 양극화 현상에 비견된다. 증산은 이러한 시대상황을 ‘진멸지경(盡滅之境)’으로 진단하였다. 또한 이러한 사회적 불균형의 해결방안으로 상생의 이념을 주창하였다. 이해와 존중, 그리고 평등의 가치를 내포한 상생의 이념은 갈등이나 충돌을 해소한 이상적 공동사회를 지향한다. 또한 상호 신뢰와 존중이 선행되는 보편적 가치의 윤리 규범인 것이다. 증산이 제시하는 상생의 정신은 대순진리회 종교교육의 이념적 근간을 이루고 있다. 우선 신도들의 대내적 재교육 프로그램으로서의 수강과 연수 그리고 공부는 인격적 성숙과 종교인으로서의자질 함양을 목표로 한다. 이를 통해 양극화 현상의 극복을 위한 교육적 실효성을 거두고 있다. 한편, 교육기관을 통한 종교교육은 건전한 가치관과 올바른 세계관을 형성하는데 역점을 두어 구성원 간의 원활한 의사소통 능력을 배양시켜며 더불어 살아가는 상생의 정신을 함양한다. 종교의 핵심은 믿는 것이 아니라 믿음을 근거로 한 실천에 있다. 우리사회는 단순한 경제적 불균형을 넘어 이미 계층구조의 고착화로 이어지고 있다. 이와 같은 시점에서 ‘나’와 ‘남’이 상생의 관계 속에 있다는 인식의 전환과 아울러 이의 윤리적 실천은 우리사회가 직면한 양극화 현상을 극복할 수 있는 실마리가 될 것으로 기대한다.
In recent times, the polarization of society has become a grave social problem. This is due to the fact that polarization does not only affect the economic inequality but also affects public’s every day life. In other words, the polarization of poor and rich leads to inequality of opportunities, further leading to social hierarchy which in turn causes conflicts between publics. This reminds retrogression of society to premodern era. This paper aims to study Jeung-San’s ‘Sang-Saeng(相生)’ ideology and religious education of Daesoonjinrihoi in order to derive ideological solution to recent societies’ polarization problem. In the era of late Joseon dynasty, when Jeung-San was active religion of the time, the Joseon society was based on hierarchical foundation, with various form of inequality. This era somewhat depicts the present polarized society of Korea. Jeung-San depicted the social phenomenon as ‘Jin Meol Ji Kyung(盡滅之境)’, a state of complete destruction. Thus Jeung-San suggested the idea of ‘Sang-Saeng’ in order to resolve the problem. The ‘Sang-Saeng’ idea combines understanding, respecting and equality to aim for ideological communal society which is resolved of conflicts and collision between people.Moreover the society prioritizes trust and respect between people as ethical value. As shown above, the religious education of Daesoonjinrihoi is based on ‘Sang-Saeng’ ideology of Jeung-San. By lecturing the believers with internal education program which allows maturity of personal sprit, the education is effective in terms of overcoming the polarization problems. On the other hand, the education provided by organization allows development of ‘Sang-Saeng’ idea for believers by focusing on building healthy values and perspective of world which enables the people to live in harmony. The core of religion is not believing but actively practising religion with belief. In present times when the society is not only in the stage of economical inequality and arriving at the age of fixation of hierarchy, the awareness of ‘I’ and ‘You’ being in a coexistence relationship and active practice of ethics will become the leading clue to resolve and overcome the polarization problem of our time.
