In this study, we examined how grit predicts academic success in comparison with mastery and performance-approach goals in a sample of 223 undergraduate students. Grit has been known to be a powerful predictor of academic success since its introduction into the educational field. However, recent studies are actively debating its utility as a predictor of academic success. Hence, this study performed two hierarchical regressions using SPSS 21.0 to compare the variance that the variables contribute to the officially registered GPA of the selected sample and assessed how much variance in GPA is explained by grit and achievement goals. The findings show that mastery and performance-approach goals better explained variance in GPA than grit. Thus, this study indicates achievement goals are better predictors of academic success. These findings have significant theoretical and practical implications.
그릿은 교육을 비롯한 다양한 분야영역에서 성취나 성적을 예측하는 매우 강력한 변인으로 알려져 왔지만, 최근의 연구들은 학업성취를 설명하는데 있어서 그릿의 유용성에 대한 의문점을 제기하고 있다. 본 연구는 성적을 예측하는 그릿의 유용성을 확인하고자, 전통적 학습동기 변인 중 하나인 성취목표 이론과 그릿의 예측력을 비교하고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 대학생 269명이 본 연구에 참여하였으면, 최종적으로 223명의 자료를 분석하여 그릿과 성취목표의 설명력을 살펴봤다. 연구분석은 SPSS 21.0 통계프로그램을 사용하여 기초 통계, Pearson 상관분석 및 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 그릿에 비해 숙달 및 수행접근목표가 학업성취인 GPA에 대한 설명력이 높음을 나타내었다. 이러한 결과는 성취목표가 학생들의 학업성취도를 더 잘 예측하고 있음을 시사한다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 시사점을 제시하였으며, 제한점을 바탕으로 후속 연구에 대한 제언을 논의하였다.
