본 연구에서는 2000년 5월 미국의 Clay 수학연구소에서 발표한 21세기에 해결해야할 7대 미해결 난제 중의 하나인 Birch와 Swinnerton-Dyer 추측의 발생과 의미, 증명의 시도에 대한 역사를 조망함으로써 수학적 난제에 대한 이해와 증명 가능성을 탐색해 보았다. 이러한 노력을 바탕으로 추후 Birch와 Swinnerton-Dyer 추측을 연구하려는 수학자들에게는 동기 부여를 할 수 있으며 수학에 관심을 가진 많은 학생들에게는 수학 문제에 대한 수학자들의 노력을 보여줄 수 있었다. 본 연구는 Birch와 Swinnerton-Dyer 추측의 수학적 의미와 기본 개념, 증명을 위한 수학자들의 노력과 역사에 대해 알아보고 수학사적 시사점을 도출하였다.
This study aimed to survey the birth, meaning, and history of the proof of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, which was selected one of very difficult seven mathematical problems at Clay mathematical institute in May 2000, which could be tried to solve in 21st century for mathematicians. This study also aimed to understand and determine the possibilities of the proof for the conjecture. With this effort, this study can be a starting point for the mathematicians and can show the efforts of mathematicians for difficult mathematical problems to the students who are interested in mathematics. This study included the mathematical meaning and basic concept of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, efforts of mathematicians who tried to prove the conjecture, and the history of ongoing proofs up to now.
