This study aimed to understand the meaning and essence of the experiences of academic high school girls in self-growth group art therapy. The study participants were 6 girls from an academic high school located in S city who voluntarily participated in self-growth group art therapy once a week in 120-minute per sessions, for a total of 6 sessions. The researcher analyzed the data collected from December 2019 to April 2020 by using van Manen s hermeneutic phenomenological method, and derived 16 sub-topics and 5 essential topics. The conclusions are were as follows; First, self-growth group art therapy was an experience of self-healing for the participants. Second, self-growth group art therapy was an experience of self-exploration for the participants. Third, self-growth group art therapy was an experience for the participants to accept and integrate their various emotions. Fourth, self-growth group art therapy was an experience for the participants to accept the others’ perspectives and expand their own. Fifth, self-growth group art therapy was an experience for participants to have courage for their future. Through this study, it was found that self-growth group art therapy supports overall growth for academic high school girls as a tool to help their psychological progress. The significance and limitations of this study are discussed based on these results.
