This inquiry was a basic study to develop a room painting as a projection test, and the goal was to obtain an analytical meaning of the room painting and to prove the projective value of drawing a room as an important space for the individual's life. The subjects of the study according to the goal are room paintings of artists’ and college students. In order to obtain the overall story and meaning of the room, three artists’paintings expressing important periods of their lives as major objects and the paintings of college students who were independent as adults were selected for the study. The participants were 270 students from four universities in D City and P City, and their 263 paintings were analyzed. Resultingly, the artists' room paintings symbolically showed the meaning of the changing and growing process, rest, and mature defense mechanism. From the college students’paintings, the researcher could directly understand the self-concept and psychological independence of students. Research results shone light on the distinguishable characteristics of the room picture from other projection tests. Based on these results, this study discussed the significance and limitations of the study.
