This study presents a case of sandplay therapy of child’s mother who was in the mental state of an undifferentiated girl with an immature ego due to her father who had put high expectations on her regarding her academic achievements and was very controlling to her while rearing her. This study analyzed the 14 sessions of a total of 24 sessions of sandplay therapy where the client created sand trays by dividing them into four stages according to the stream of her consciousness. The client, whose ego remained undifferentiated, had difficulty facing her shadow. This psychological state hindered her from adapting to reality and getting away from the inner chaotic state. In this case of sandplay therapy that aimed at overcoming these difficulties, the client experienced the process where she recognized her shadow; avoided it due to the fear of it; struggled with it; accepted it as her friend; and finally integrated it as part of her personality. This case is significant as it illustrates the process of the recognition, acceptance and integration of the shadow, which constitute the first stage of individuation, through the contact with sand.
