국제스포츠행사의 중요성은 그동안 이 행사를 치러온 국가들의 상황을 살펴보면 더욱더 확연하다. 국제스포츠 행사를 통해 많은 국가들이 국제사회에서 자국의 이미지를 향상시키고, 경제적인 부가가치를 창출하였으며, 국민들의 자긍심을 일깨워 일등 세계시민으로서의 자부심을 갖게 하는 원동력이 되었다. 그러나 이러한 국제스포츠 행사를 개최하면서 나타난 문제점도 간과할 수 없다. 부실한 대회준비로 인해 국가의 이미지가 실추될 수 있고, 과도한 투자를 통해 국가 경제가 위축될 수도 있으며, 대회에 대한 무관심으로 반쪽대회가 될 수도 있다. 현재 많은 국가들이 세계적인 스포츠행사를 유치하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 이러한 노력에 비추어 볼 때, 분명 세계적인 스포츠 행사는 국가발전 뿐만 아니라 부가적인 시너지 효과를 창출할 수 있는 좋은 기제로 각광받고 있다. 2011년 세계육상선수권대회는 중앙정부차원에서 대회를 유치하여 개최하는 것이 아니라 지방자치단체 차원에서 대회유치와 개최에 따른 운영 전반을 책임지고 있다. 이는 지방자치단체의 역량을 전 세계에 과시할 수 있는 좋은 기회이기도 하지만, 한편으로 대회의 성공적인 개최를 위해 지방자치단체가 많은 노력과 희생을 해야 한다.대회 개최는 3년여 남았지만 지금부터 적극적인 대회 준비를 해야 하는 시점이다. 이를 위해서는 중앙정부의 적극적인 지원과 지방자치단체의 세밀한 대회 준비가 뒤 따라야 한다. 그리고 대회에 대한 전 국민의 관심집중과 지역민들의 호응 또한 중요한 성공요건의 하나이다.
