국문초록

The purpose of this article is to figure out how much the role of theology in pastoral counseling is crucial. The acceptance of psychology or counseling psychology in the 1990s in the field of pastoral counseling has opaqued the role of theology which has been considered as a basis to sustain the church for several centuries. Some pastoral counselors, individually or collectively, have regarded the function of psychology as if the magical tool to understand and analyze people's minds. Thus so many various theories influenced by psychology have emerged in pastoral counseling, and these camouflaged theories have threatened the identity of Christianity and pastoral counseling. Applying all theories without critiques makes to face the crisis of pastoral counseling. In this situation what we need to remember is that psychology is not the magical one to understand people, but it is a tool. Beside this, psychology has lots of limitations to understand people, because it is a way to understand people. Thus it cannot be considered as panacea.. Theology was a basis to understand people and God. Understanding humans based on theology was a tradition of church. And in this angle we have been educated and living religious lives. In this sense, we pastoral counselors need back to the past world in which theology was considered as a tool to see and understand congregation's situations. Even though the perspectives of psychology and theology on human beings are different, these two areas can be correlational. Theology can provide critiques regarding the perspectives of psychology on human beings. As we accept the critiques, the field of pastoral psychology will be performing a desirable role. In mentioning the role of theology in pastoral counseling, I do not overlook the function of psychology. Psychology also can provide lots of insights on human beings which cannot be effectively given by theology. In this viewpoint, doing pastoral counseling in contemporary society needs to combine these aspects, psychology and theology, and it will provide widened views to understand and counsel people.
