In this paper, I explore the suicidal problem which is a recently increasing phenomena in Korean society. First, I survey the relevant statistical numbers of the suicidal phenomena in Korean society and analyse its cases and interpret the meaning behind them. Second, I explore the theoretical background of the suicidal problem. I summarize the sociological, psychodynamic, socio-environmental, and pastoral theological approach about the suicide. Third, I try to suggest the suicidal prevention tactic in terms of pastoral counseling perspective based on narrative pastoral counseling theory. According to narrative pastoral counseling theory, human beings are story-makers by which they interpret their lives within a certain framework. From this narrative approach, the person who has tried to commit suicide can be understood as a person who has severe damage in his/her narrative because his/her life story is full of despair and without any hope. Thus, it is very important for the pastoral counselors to not only prevent the suicidal attempt itself, but also to heal a damaged life story which has no future expectation and hope. In this sense, I argue that pastoral counseling for those who are deeply affected by negative life events and try to end their lives must incorporate narrative therapy, which emphasizes not only healing the negative life story, but also reconstruct the new story based on hope for the future. In conclusion, I emphasize the role of Korean church in terms of pastoral counseling, in that it gives the proper required space for a person's healthy life story-making process to develop.
